With increasingly hot summer periods, our dog friends are not immune to heat stroke.

Here's how to help our four-legged friends have a great summer.

Body temperature in dogs

  • Humans have sweat glands all over their body. According to the work of Dr. Alexis Carrel in his book The man this stranger "The sweat glands cover the skin with sweat, which evaporates lowers the temperature."
  • Dogs have a few sweat glands only between the pads, which does not allow them to sweat. The heat makes them very vulnerable. To regulate their body temperature, dogs gasp and produce more saliva to bring fresh air to their lungs.
  • Brachycephalic dogs (bulldog, pug, boxer, etc.) have a mouth shape that does not allow sufficient air and saliva production. Teachers must be extra vigilant to avoid heat stroke.
  • Older, overweight dogs or dogs with heart problems (Cavalier King Charles, French Bulldog) should be watched.

Avoiding heat stroke in dogs

  • Change your habits by walking your dog early in the morning or later in the evening to escape the heatwave.
  • Leave him fresh water at will.
  • Wet it regularly with a damp towel or sprayer. Do not use ice water (risk of hydrocution).
  • Let him sleep in a cool room of your house with tiled floors.
  • Offer him grooming. Avoid a too short cut, because the hair is an insulator. Brush it well to remove dead hair.
  • Put the air conditioning in your vehicle or open the windows when transporting your pet.
  • Place an ice pack covered with a pillowcase in your dog's bedding (for non-destructive dogs).
  • Provide shade for it in your garden and why not a container with water.

Spotting a dog with heatstroke

  • Violet tongue.
  • Urinary incontinence.
  • Loud panting and excessive drooling.

If your dog is showing symptoms and you suspect heatstroke, you should cool him down as soon as possible and take him to your vet. This is a life-threatening emergency. He will place him under a drip to eliminate toxins and limit damage to vital organs.

What does the law say if you see an endangered dog locked in a car?

Article 122-7 of the Penal Code

"The person who, faced with a current or imminent danger which threatens himself, others or property, performs an act necessary to protect the person or property, is not criminally liable, unless there is disproportion between the means employed and the seriousness of the threat. "

  • Call the gendarmerie and explain the circumstances. Then contact an animal association.
  • Find a witness who will speak on your behalf.
  • If the situation becomes really critical, break the window and lead the animal into the shade. It is absolutely necessary to refresh it.

When the gendarmes arrive, present your witness and the association will help you in the event of a complaint against you.

Sadly, many dogs die each year after dying in an overheated car.

Smart advice

  • Useful purchases to refresh your dog:
  • Refreshing carpet.
  • Gourd with integrated bowl for walks.
  • Never let your dog walk on hot tar (burn of the pads).
  • Watch out for sunburn for hairless, white or short-haired dogs. Some vets advise wearing light, white clothing or sunscreen.
